I am delighted you are here! If you are reading this, then chances are you are interested in learning about watercolor.

Maybe you have never touched a paint brush
or
Maybe you've been dabbling in painting for quite some time, but you feel stuck and frustrated
due to the lack of progress.

Watercolor Essential is a course that empowers you - an aspiring watercolor artist,
with the knowledge you need to start painting your favorite subject in watercolor!

I have been painting using watercolor for 3 years.
And you might think "3 years? That's not that long!" and you're right.

However, within 3 years I was able to paint from...

I was also able to paint an airplane for the first time with this result:

How?
Strong fundamentals, and the right course of action!

The Fundamentals

Before I started to paint using watercolor, I had years of artistic training. I work in the game industry and produce digital painting. I also discovered that regardless of the medium you use, they all share the same core fundamental skills. Therefore, I'm here to tell you that if you learn a solid fundamental and the basics of watercolor, you have the essential knowledge to help you to paint a good painting.

The Right Course of Action

It is imperative that you invest hours of practice, but taking the right course of action is even more important. Having artistic talent might help, but it's far from necessary if you want to become a good artist. If you paint aimlessly for years, you will progress very slowly. You need to understand what you need to work on in order to progress.

That is what Watercolor Essential is about. It provides you the core fundamental knowledge and a specific path for you to work towards.

This is what you are getting:

  • A complete course - The course is a complete package from fundamental drawing and  basic watercolor technique to advanced painting. Most watercolor workshops only focus on doing specific painting. While it is great to learn how to do specific painting, you need to learn the core skills and technique to be able to paint your own subject!
  • Learn how to paint loose - If you are interested in my course, chances are you are interested in my style of painting. However, I wouldn’t call loose painting a “style”. It’s more of an artistic choice. Furthermore, the ability to make these choices lies within your ability to come up with visual language, simplified composition and shape design, something that we will be covering in the course as well. These will all be available for you! No hidden locked content, no membership subscription. When you
  • Always up to date - I believe in the quality of the course and I will keep striving for better quality contents that will help you to learn to paint using watercolor. For this reason, I will ensure my course is equipped with better, more updated content, whether it’s the lessons themselves, the video quality or a better, newer demonstration. I will continue to update my content with no additional charge.

Three options for you

The advantage of the online course is that you can take your time, go at your own pace and access it anywhere. However the downside is the lack of personal interaction and attention. As such, 2 additional options offer more engagement with added value:

The workshop (limited to 20 students per 6 months)-

  • Access to the closed group- This is the option for you if you want more interaction as we go over the materials together. If you have a specific question about anything from the course, this option will give you a channel to ask them to receive priority responses. With this option, you have access to a closed online group for 6 months and will be able to discuss with me and other students. Think of it as a private hangout lounge that we can show our works, share painting tips and more!
  • 2 full length demo painting videos- You might have seen my YouTube videos. While I try to make them as in-depth as I can, I still need to maintain a certain length. In this course, I won’t need to cut down the length. It will be a full length painting demo with only minor speed up. You will get to see a more complete process from start to finish and I will be including 2 full length demo videos.
  • One signed limited edition print- If you have ever been to a live watercolor workshop or demo; you are probably familiar with instructors putting their in-class demo pieces up for sell. So I decided to do the same. Each person will receive a signed limited edition print of the painting I did for the demo. My gecleé is produced with very high quality paper and pigment inks. Moreover, this includes framing and shipping (free shipping for US and Canada only).

The premium (limited to 5 students per 6 months)-

  • Commission demo- This is a one-of-a kind experience. Basically, you get to provide me a subject to paint. It can be a city scenery, natural landscape, boat on water etc. I will be recording a video from start to finish showing you how I tackle the subject, the process of drawing and the painting. Moreover, you will be the only person I show this to!
  • Original painting- After I finish with your request, the one and only original painting is yours to keep! The pricing for this option is actually lower than my typical commission rate. And you get more than just the painting!

*Due to the nature of the course, I will not be able to accept a portrait or figure request. ‘Portrait and figure’ is a whole other subject that requires its own course.

What do people say about the course?

I attended a watercolor workshop before, and it was about the same price as Eric’s. It was 7 lessons, and I had to get up early and drive to a house every time. Eric’s online class just showed me how much more there was to learn about watercolor, and the best thing is, you don’t have to be like me, waking up early and going through traffic to learn watercolor. You can do it right at the comfort of your own home, and you can even replay the videos as much as you want.
And to make it even better, Eric teaches you how to draw. I walked away from that workshop without painting for years because I had no idea how to draw, so I had nothing to paint. Eric’s watercolor course is THE course if you want to learn how to paint. All it took was two lessons to see that Eric knows what he’s doing.
— Shannelle Chua
Eric’s teaching is precise and easy to understand and use. I have already applied his teaching to my own work and am seeing immediate improvement. I highly recommend his courses for anyone looking to learn watercolor or take their work to the next level.
— Julie Ramirez
As a professional illustrator, I wish I could have taken this course. Eric made the fundamentals of drawing simple and comprehensive!
— Yuko Fukushima
Since I’m a total newb at drawing and painting I was afraid I would not be able to keep up with the lessons. But Eric has structured the course in a very logical, step by step way that it is impossible not to make progress from lesson to lesson if you do what he shows you. I love the fact that it’s all practical stuff combined with explanations so you understand not only what you need to do but also why you need to do it. I appreciated Eric’s calm, soothing and encouraging guidance all throughout the course. I highly recommended it for anyone starting out with drawing and watercolor painting.
— Raluca Popescu
This is a really in-depth course and I like the way it is set up. The lessons are clear and concise so you can watch a lesson quickly and then have time to integrate it and practice before continuing the next lesson or you can binge a bunch of lessons in a row if you choose. Each lesson is simple and easy to understand so you can immediately start learning but they are complex enough that an intermediate artist won’t feel bored.

The course is set up into four main sections: Drawing (Perspective); Drawing (Lighting and Material); Watercolor and Advanced. In the watercolor section it starts with basic washes and mixing then you will graduate into painting a beautiful many-layered coffee scene and a landscape of a barn. Each project is laid out step by step so you don’t feel afraid to try it and work alongside the videos.

I really enjoyed the lessons on perspective. Previously, I have avoided anything to do with perspective because it seemed tedious and mathematical and time consuming. But his lessons break down perspective into bite sized chunks and I can see how I can use this information to improve my own drawing. It wasn’t intimidating at all!
I think this course is worth it just for the drawing lessons and I can’t wait to get into the watercolor section because Eric is a master at this art form. I know I will learn so much from him!

FAQ

Q: Who is this course for?
A: In simple words. It's for beginners and aspiring artists. However, allow me to elaborate on this a little. I am talking about stage rather than time. You can be painting for 10 years and never had a solid training; therefore, you are struggling to reach your desired level. You can also be painting for 3 years, but with very intense and formal training, so you are progressing at a very good rate. If you are struggling to progress and unable to find which direction you should work towards, this course is for you. Additionally, if you have just started to learn how to draw/paint and are looking for a good system to train, this course is for you as well.

Q: Will you be able to take individual lessons rather than the whole course? I could certainly use help in specific areas but I’m not starting from scratch having been an artist for a long time.
A: Currently, there is no plan for individual lessons. Since everyone may have a different need, it will be difficult to design a course that's for everyone. However, students who enroll in The Workshop and The Premium will be able to ask questions and request feedback from the closed group people. I will be able to answer your questions there.

Q: I need to know if you can access the course anytime you want or you must attend some specific hours.
A: The beauty of the online course is to be able to access it anytime, anywhere as long as you have internet access. Upon release, there will be a rich amount of content for you with updates and contents along the way!

Q: Will this be a monthly subscription thing?
A: No! This is not a membership system. You pay once for the course and that is it! The Workshop and The Premium students will have access to the closed group for 6 months. However, the course materials will always be available for you.

Q: This is a watercolor course, why do you include perspective and drawing lessons.
A: We are all living in a 3-dimensional space and we need to learn how to paint a believable painting by looking at things 3-dimensionally. Learning perspective is learning how to analyze a 3-dimensional subject and translate it to a 2-dimensional space visually. So while perspective and fundamental drawing can be dry and boring, it is better to learn those things in the beginning than come back to them later on. You wouldn't build a house without a foundation; the same goes for learning to paint.
