Painting loose with visual language

This week I am sharing the process of my latest video. It is one of the favorite paintings I’ve done recently. Many people want to paint loose and there are many suggestions on how to paint loose. But to me, the key to a good loose painting is the understanding of visual language. Without a solid visual language, painting fast and carelessly will likely result in a messy painting.

I will be sharing what visual language is, and making a separate video about it. However, you can see in this video how many elements in this painting are very loosely painted. What made them readable is the visual language. For example, if you look closely to the seedlings in the field, they are just a few brush strokes. You read them as seedlings because of colors, values, and shapes in the context. Our brain always tries to identify the things we see, and visual language is to give just enough information for viewers’ brains to interpret what they see.

Visual language is a huge topic to tackle, and I dedicated a whole section in my course to talk about it. But I will be sharing some tips and clarify what visual language is in the near future.
